Ball sets replaced The white numbered balls, which have been used for Multi-State Lottery drawing since the LOTTO*AMERICA game started in 1988, have been replaced. The four old ball sets (numbered 1 through 4) were retired from service on Wednesday, June 5, 1996. The new white ball sets (numbered 5 through 8) were placed in service for the drawing on Saturday, June 8, 1996. The red ball sets, which were purchased new for the Powerball game have not been changed. The red ball sets are still numbered 1 through 4.
