About Powerball
It’s America’s Game! Since 1992, POWERBALL® has inspired the country with a chance to become a millionaire, while raising nearly $22 billion for good causes supported by lotteries. POWERBALL set a world record jackpot of $1.586 billion in January 2016. The record prize was shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee.
POWERBALL tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are broadcast live every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee. More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a POWERBALL ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.
The POWERBALL jackpot grows until it is won. Players select five numbers from 1 to 69; and one POWERBALL number from 1 to 26. Players can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times with the POWERPLAY® option for an additional $1 per play. NOTE: The Match 5 + POWERPLAY prize is always $2 million. The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
POWERBALL jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize as an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump sum payment. Both advertised prize options are prior to federal and jurisdictional taxes.
The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

- 35% of a ticket sale benefits the good causes supported by lotteries
- 6% of a ticket sale goes to retailer commissions
- 9% of a ticket sale goes to operating expenses

History of Powerball
Powerball celebrated its 28th Anniversary in April 2020.
The first Powerball drawing on April 22, 1992 had 15 participating lotteries: Delaware, Iowa, Idaho, Hoosier (Indiana), Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington DC, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Today, there are 47 lotteries selling the Powerball game.
In October 2015, the latest version of the Powerball game debuted with enhancements aimed at delivering bigger jackpots and more overall winners. The game matrix was changed; the number of white balls increased to 69, while the number of red balls dropped to 26. The Power Play® feature was enhanced with a 10X multiplier that is available for play whenever the advertised jackpot annuity is $150 million or less. The Match 4 + PB prize was also increased from $10 thousand to $50 thousand.
The world record $1.586 billion jackpot was won on Jan. 13, 2016. That massive Grand Prize was split by three winning tickets in California, Florida and Tennessee.

Overview
The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) is a non-profit, government-benefit, voluntary association that is owned and operated by its member lotteries. Each MUSL member offers one or more multi-jurisdictional lottery game administered with the assistance of MUSL. All profits are retained by the individual lotteries and are used to fund projects or purposes approved by their authorizing legislatures.
