While visiting southeast Missouri, a man from the Memphis, Tennessee area happened to purchase one of two $50,000 winning tickets sold in the Show Me State for the March 9 Powerball drawing.
Michael Watson of Cuba, Tennessee said he generally plays the Powerball when the jackpots start to get higher than usual. With the March 9 jackpot at $414 million, Watson said he picked up some tickets from Huck’s Food Store, 823 E. Malone Ave., in Sikeston.
“I was just filling up, then went inside to buy a candy bar and some tickets,” Watson explained.
After the drawing, Watson said he was sitting in his parked vehicle and going over the drawing’s winning numbers. After noticing that he had matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball number, Watson said he knew he’d won a sizeable prize.
“I thought, ‘Is this what I’m thinking it is?’” he recalled.
Watson’s winning ticket marks the eleventh time a player in Missouri has won $50,000 playing Powerball in 2019 and the 201st since the prize for matching four white-ball numbers and the Powerball was raised to $50,000 in 2015.
The other $50,000 winning ticket sold in Missouri for the March 9 drawing was purchased in Independence.
